10 Reasons Why You Should Learn Magic

Have you ever watched a magician performing, and thought about getting started with learning magic tricks yourself? Here we'll look at 10 good reasons why you should act on that thought, and start learning to perform magic tricks.

1 Entertain Family and Friends
If you know a few good magic tricks, you can have some real fun performing them in front of family and friends, it definitely adds something different to an event, and creates a real talking point. Also, many magic tricks can be performed with items you can find almost anywhere, like cards, coins and table napkins, so it needn't require a whole load of equipment. That means it can be easy to improvise a quick magic performance in many different social situations.

2 Put On A Show For Kids
Kids love magic tricks, and being able to perform some magic at kids parties is a really good skill to have. Parents are always looking for ways to entertain their kids at birthday parties, so being able to mention that you 'can do a few magic tricks' might lead to you getting involved in a performance. Keep it simple and involve lots of humour and audience participation, and it'll go down a treat.

3 Break The Ice At Parties / Meetings
Doing a few quick magic tricks can be a great way of breaking the ice at a party or meeting. It gets people talking, and they'll be interested in finding out about your magical skills. A good place to start with this is with 'table magic', after a good meal. People are relaxed, and doing some magic tricks with coins or tableware can create a real buzz.

4 Find Enjoyment With A New Hobby
These days, it's very easy to get submerged in the routines of daily life, so it's good and healthy to have some other interests. Learning magic tricks doesn't have to take up a lot of time at first, but it can be a good way of relaxing. There are plenty of tricks and skills to learn, so there will never be any shortage of material to get stuck into!

5 Enjoy People Asking 'How Did You Do That', and Enjoy Not Telling Them!
There's something really satisfying about performing a trick to an audience, then afterwards having someone ask you how you did it. Many tricks often have a very simple 'secret', but to members of the audience unaware of this, it can often seem quite baffling, which is obviously why people are drawn to someone performing a magic trick. It's most important though not to let on how the trick was done - it's best to create the illusion that you can really perform magical acts, and leave them scratching their heads!

6 Build Self Confidence and Presentation Skills
As you practice and rehearse a particular trick, you first learn the mechanics of performing a trick, i.e. the 'secret' behind it. Perhaps even more important than the 'how to' though, is the presentation and patter that you go through when performing in front of an audience. That can really help build your self confidence, and presentation skills in front of people generally, which can be useful in other situations.

7 Develop Your Creativity - Modify Tricks & Make Them Your Own
If you take one magic trick, and ask 100 magicians to perform it, you'll get 100 unique performances. Even though the elements of the trick are the same, each one will put their own special spin on it to make it their own. You can really have fun with this, taking an existing trick and figuring out how to tweak and change it so that it becomes something completely your own, even a totally new trick.

8 Add A Unique Aspect To A Presentation or Speech
Have you ever sat through a boring presentation or speech? Probably quite a few. If you're giving a presentation or speech, working a magic trick or two into it can be a good way to get people's attention, so they're more likely to listen to the rest of your talk. You can even do this in a way that illustrates the topic of your speech, by a careful choice of trick.

9 Have A Hobby Which Can Earn You Extra Money
If you persevere with learning and performing magic tricks, you may well get to the point where you can earn some money for your performances, say for kids parties, or local corporate events. Organisers of company dinners often arrange for magicians to entertain their guests by performing magic tricks at tables. Or your local restaurant might be interested in someone who can entertain their diners. Once you have some solid trick performances under your belt, there are plenty of ways to earn extra money by performing.

10 Carry On a Rich Tradition of Performance Magic That's Centuries Old
Magic has been performed in front of audiences for thousands of years, and there is a rich history of great magicians who have amazed people in the past. Even when doing simple magic tricks yourself, it's good to know that you're carrying on this tradition, and are following in the footsteps of those famous magicians from yesterday. Studying the history of magic is also useful for learning about different tricks and performance styles.

Magic in your Social Life

Magic is not only an art of conjuring by itself, but it is a great social tool for connecting with people. Through performing magic tricks, you get to interact with people and to know them more than what you normally get to know about them.

We were all amazed once by magic when we were children. Whenever we are amazed by a magic trick again as adults, it appeals to the child that is in all of us, triggering those naive yet innocent feelings we once felt as children. Those of us who still have very much of the child in us would be very amused when we see a magic performance and may even react just like children.

In my attempt to bamboozle my colleagues at the office, I've gone from table to table performing magic tricks to them. As I approach different people, I learned much about each person. As adults, we tend to be too rational and so some people react to my performance with suspicions, always trying to challenge me by figuring out how my tricks work. Such people merely kill the entertainment by trying to figure out too much. Some are too intelligent for their own good and think to themselves that nothing can fool them. However, the people they ever fooled were themselves. They thought they could figure out any magic tricks with their superficial presumptions but they were all wrong.

For the more objective audience, they too try to figure the tricks but were really amazed when they found the effects of the tricks were too amazing beyond their comprehension. They will stop pretending to be "Mr. Know-all" when they realized that it is beyond their comprehension. The most appealing audiences I had were those who reacted like little children when they experienced a magical effect. There was a well educated lady in her fifties I encountered who snapped her fingers at my card just like I did, actually expecting to reproduce the same magical effect that I had just produced before her. I was so amused by her child-like innocence that not only was she entertained by so was I.

Some people use magic to impress women. It is common that whenever I show some magic tricks to people, I would get this remark, "Why do you learn magic? Is it to impress women?" I find these people shallow and not to mention that I find their remarks offending. Nevertheless, it is true that people do use magic to impress women. There are so-called magicians out there who offer to teach magic to people so that they could impress women with the magic they learn. But of course that is a lie that these so-called magicians who would like to propagate just so that they could sell their trades of teaching amateurish magic tricks. If you are only using magic to impress women, you would eventually resort to only learning a small handful of magic tricks. And for these people, I would suggest that they might as well just keep a few gimmicks in their pockets. The art of performing magic is too vast and profound for these people to invest their time, effort and money into learning magic.

It is a lie that all women are amazed with magic. In my experience of performing magic to my friends and colleagues, I have encountered many women who are simply bad audience for magic. However I do not dismiss the fact that performing magic can enhance interaction and even create attraction from women if executed well.

Magic Tricks Tips for Parents and Children

In my magic courses and magic shows, I'm often asked how parents can foster their child's interest in magic.

Below are a few important steps to help to your kids learn how to do magic tricks and explore the Art of Magic.

1.Encourage your children to learn how to do magic tricks through the local library.
You don't need to buy the latest magic set or stacks of DVDs on sleight of hand to learn how to do magic. Libraries have a ton of resources on magic, magic history, juggling, and magic specifically for kids. It doesn't hurt that all this knowledge is FREE! A good beginner's book in magic will provide the initial foundation for your child to learn several magic tricks and help assess their interest in learning more about the Art of Magic.

2. Remind them to practice both the "moves" and the "story" when learning the magic trick. Magicians refer to their "story" as patter. Patter is the words used in the presentation of the magic trick. Kids (and adults) new to magic often focus purely on the "moves" rather than the presentation. Reminding the performer to focus on the story as well as the moves will only help your son or daughter become more proficient in their performance. Plus their magic trick will be more entertaining!

3. Visit your local magic shop
The library has a lot of resources, but a magic shop is often the defacto hot spot for any budding performer. Reputable magic shops are staffed with experienced prestidigitators that can help your child learn how to do magic. Watch out for any magic dealer who will sell an expensive magic prop without considering the skill of the performer. When purchasing magic, my recommendation is to invest in books before DVDs. Books have a lot of material that can be referred to time and time again. DVDs are good too however, the latest trend in magic is to release one trick per DVD. You want to ensure you get the most magic for your investment. The DVD will also show how the effect will be presented as well as the "secret". Both books and DVDs are useful learning tools. I prefer these to the standard tricks you find in the glass booths...but those are fun too! Magic shops will sometime host magic nights where local magicians get together and have a "jam session" demonstrating their latest magical pursuit.

4. Join a local magic assembly, ring, or group.
If you search http://www.magicsam.com or http://www.magician.org, you can find a local Assembly or Ring comprised of local magicians in your metropolitan area. Magic meetings are a fun place to network with other hobbyists, professionals, and newbies interested in the Art of Magic. Most magic organizations are welcoming of new members and are willing to share the secrets of their trade. However, the student must be willing to learn and practice rather than expect all the secrets to be revealed.

5. Attend a magic convention
Magic conventions are another excellent way to meet other magicians, see different magic acts, meet different magic vendors, and purchase new magic. Most conventions are held in a hotel where magicians provide lectures, advice, perform parlor sized shows, and even perform full scale theater shows. Every night magicians gather in the lobby and session with each other. It is another easy way to make new friends and learn a few new tricks of the trade.

I hope you found these tips helpful in your child's pursuit of learning how to do magic.
